IDB Lab and Partners Launch of Telemedicine Pilot Project in Panama
A visionary collaboration between IDB Lab, the innovation laboratory of the Inter-American Development Bank Group, the Fondazione Politecnico di Milano (FPM), and the University of Panama has transformed medical care for elderly citizens in Panama through groundbreaking innovation. The Wearably Monitoring the Cardiovascular Risk (WMRC) pilot project, launched on September 23, is a pioneering initiative aimed at promoting active and healthy aging through telemedicine.
This innovative project focused on personalized prevention and the adoption of information and communication technologies (ICT) began with the training of an initial group of 10 older adults in the use of the "Passport to Healthy Living", a training tool created by the Panamanian Ministry of Health (MINSA). The participants also received remote monitoring technology devices, such as a smartwatch and a scale.
The next steps involve the formation of the control group, whose members, unlike the previous ones, will only receive the "Passport to Healthy Living" training. The data from the development of both groups will be meticulously evaluated to measure the differences between those who use technology and those who do not and will illustrate the real impact of technology in promoting a healthy lifestyle and preventing chronic diseases in older adults.
The next stages of the project will provide information and insights into how remote monitoring technologies impact the quality of life of older adults. Exercise habits, diet and other physical health indicators will be carefully analyzed, providing a complete picture of participants' well-being.
This project represents a breakthrough in healthcare in Panama with a model that could transform how the challenges of aging are addressed throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. With this initiative, technology becomes a powerful ally in the quest for a healthier future for all generations, empowering communities and paving the way for dignified and healthy aging.
